BAY CITY — The Bay City Commission on Monday night approved a contract agreement with the city's largest union.
Utility Workers Union of America Local 542 ratified its contract last month by one vote. City officials said they have not received notice that any member has challenged the vote.
This is the city's fourth of eight unions to reach an agreement in the past year, since City Manager Robert Belleman said cuts would need to be made as the city faced a $1.66. million budget deficit.
The contract includes several concessions, including suspending food, meal and clothing allowances and having employees pay more into health care costs and pensions.
The contract also brings back most of the 11 laid-off employees, with the exception of four bridge tenders. The city will use a temporary hire service during the shipping season.
Commission John Davidson thanked the union for working with the city to reach an agreement.
"I know it's been a hard road for you guys," he said.
