E.J. Faley has been a racer all of his life.
Faley spent 23 years working in the pace car section at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He would spend the month of May working on the pace cars.
“I’ve always been a race fan,” Faley said. “We’ve had go-carts, stock cars and motorcycles.”
Faley would run at different tracks in the area. He also still owns a 1953 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
He retired from Consumers Energy in 1988 after 37 years with the company as a mechanic. He also worked in building services there.
Now, he keeps busy helping neighbors with their lawns and snow removal in the winter. He will hop on his tractor with a snow plow on it and drive around the block, clearing snow for all of his neighbors.
“I enjoy it,” Faley said. “I’m on my fourth or fifth tractor.”
He also is spending a lot of time with his wife, Ruth, who has been ill in the past year.
He has lived in the same home in Jackson since 1950.
“We built the house. It’s momma’s house,” Faley said.
A member at St. John Catholic Church, Faley has been an usher for the 4:15 p.m. Saturday mass since 1951.
“You have to go to church anyways, so you may as well do something,” he said.
