Local union members give away 44 turkeys

Thursday, December 9, 2010

From the December 1, 2010 edition of the Newaygo Times:

Members of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 337 delivered a total of 44 holiday turkeys to local families last week.

Local union President Kevin Johnson said that the union's 22 local members were given two turkeys apiece and asked to give them to families that they knew could use the help and encouragement.

"We have a lot of people out there struggling to get by," said Johnson.  "We see a lot of them first-hand in our work.  We just wanted to do something to help."

The union represents Consumers Energy employees who work out of the Fremont service center and at the Croton, Hardy and Rogers Dam hydroelectric facilities.

Johnson said that the local union members unanimously agreed to a proposal that local dues money be used to purchase the turkeys.
