Scholarship Rules 2009

2009 MARSHALL M. HICKS
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

In 1996 the delegate body of the Michigan State Utility Workers Council (MSUWC) established the Marshall M. Hicks Memorial Scholarship Program in memory of past Council and National President, Marshall M. Hicks.

Entry eligibility

High school seniors who are the son or daughter of a MSUWC active or retired member, and/or the son or daughter of an active member who died as a direct result of an on the job injury, can submit entry for the scholarships.

Year of eligibility

Students are eligible for entry into the scholarship drawing during the scholarship year that coincides with their graduation from high school, i.e., 2009 Scholarship/2009 Graduation.

How to enter

To be entered into the scholarship drawing, the student must submit a scholarship entry form to the MSUWC for the year of the scholarship/high school graduation by April 30, 2009.

Selection of award winners

Two recipients will be selected at the May meeting of the MSUWC by a blind drawing from all of the eligible entry forms submitted. Recipients and their immediate family will be invited to the September meeting of the MSUWC for the awards acknowledgement.

Amount of the award

Awards will be a one-time payment in the amount of $1000 and will be awarded to two (2) students, each year, as identified by the drawing.

Requirements for payment of the award

Recipients will receive the $1000 scholarship upon proof of acceptance and attendance at any university, college, or trade school, etc.

Also believing it to be right and just for men and women to unite in purpose and action, to help those who are less fortunate, to increase the benefits as are inherent in a free society dedicated to the principle of free enterprise;

Sincerely urge all Local Unions to take an active, and aggressive part in this Council.

We pledge ourselves to the democratic principles as set forth in this Constitution.

In 1996, the delegate body of the Michigan State Utility Workers Council (MSUWC) established the Marshall M. Hicks Memorial Scholarship Program in memory of past Council and National President, Marshall M. Hicks.  Who was he?  Click here for a short bio of this great man and great unionist.

  2022 MARSHALL M. HICKS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

At a Michigan State Utility Workers Council Board Meeting held on May 13, 2022, five blind drawings were conducted for the 2022 Marshall M. Hicks Scholarships, with the winners being:  Westin Schell, son of Damian Schell, Local 104-Saginaw; Broc Shoemaker, son of Scott Shoemaker, Local 258-Adrian/Erie; Hailey Rhoads, daughter of David Rhoads, Local 254-Macomb; Jagger Chism, son of Matthew Chism, Local 388-Campbell; and Nicole Yacks, daughter of Robert Yacks, Local 104-Saginaw.

Each recipient has received a one-time payment in the amount of $1,000. 

This year's students are the 61st through the 65th recipients to the scholarships in honor of the late Marshall M. Hicks, who was the past National UWUA President and Secretary-Treasurer, and President of the MSUWC. The first scholarships were awarded in 1998.

The MSUWC would like to congratulate all the winners on their achievements and we wish them the best as they go forward to pursue their education and careers.
